How The Clans Came to Be

1872

The story of the beginning of the warrior clans has been passed down by cats of all clans, from elder to warrior, from warrior to apprentice, from queen to kit. The story is never the same, and parts grow uncertain, but there are few details that survive each telling...

Once long ago, the three clans had been one. There was no Camas, no Spur and no Gilia; every cat united under a single banner, the clan name lost to time. They were wanderers, never staying in the same place twice, traveling wherever their paws took them and underneath Silverpelt's careful watch.

It is said that the first three were siblings, brothers in some iterations and sisters in others. The story is as everchanging as the land had been around them, before they found the Stargazer Steppe.

Through mountain passes, forests of juniper and pine, and great plains, they had traveled for a hundred moons before they eventually came upon a place they saw to be perfect, hidden away from all terrors of the world. There were no monsters, the prey was plentiful, and the land beautiful, more beautiful than any cat had ever seen.

Camas, the silver-tongued, urged them toward the meadows, closest to the river. The comfort it would provide would be needed for the young and the old.

Gilia, the eldest, declared the mountains to be the safest. The rocks would protect them against any who would dare to oppose them.

Spur, the wiliest, was drawn toward the open plains nestled against the treeline. It reminded them of the many nights they'd spend on flat grass beneath the stars.

They could not reach a consensus, and after much deliberating and arguing, the three decided to split apart, taking with them a small part of their clan, breaking one into three, and beginning a new age.

The peace had been kept for longer than any cat could remember, but with the leader line growing longer, their past grows further away, and so does the camaraderie they had in the beginning.

The Winter Drought
December 1967 - May 1968

Despite the cold of winter taking hold of the Steppe, the heavy snowfall that the clans are accustomed to never comes this year. The running streams and springs the clans depend on have all either ran dry or frozen entirely, and tensions begin to rise within the clans. When spring comes and water becomes none more plentiful, it becomes clear that the territories may be in trouble.

Adderstar's War
June 1968 - September 1969

Believing that Spurclan has more food and water than they're letting on, Adderstar, the bloodthirsty leader of Giliaclan, declares War. Bellstar, Camasclan's leader, tries her best to stay out of the conflict. Despite this, the clan is soon attacked by Spurclan cats, who have discovered Camasclan's supply of water. Even when the Drought begins to ease, the War between the clans rages on. When Bellstar is felled by a Giliaclan patrol, her deputy Jadefall assumes leadership, but is unable to access the sundrip to claim her nine lives. Out of desperation,  Jadefall attempts to sneak her way into the heart of Giliaclan territory anyways, but she is quickly caught and attacked by a Giliaclan patrol. A Giliaclan warrior named Cindermask betrays his clanmates and saves Jadefall's life. By hiding her in Giliaclan territory until she is able to travel, the two find they have many beliefs in common. On the way back to Camasclan's camp, Cindermask is asked to join the meadow-dwelling clan.

As the war rages on, more and more cats lose their lives. Spurclan loses their leader, Tarantulastar, to a coyote attack. Her deputy, Scorpionsting, assumes leadership.

Blood on the Grass
November 1969 - December 1969

Minkscreech, Giliaclan's current deputy, has always hated Adderstar and his dogma. Now, he has taken notice of the way his leadership is growing increasingly more erratic as the leader grows older. Deciding to end it, he tricks the Giliaclan leader and murders him on Spurclan territory, blaming the death on a Spurclan patrol. The next evening he meets with the Spurclan leader in secret- she has also been unable to claim her nine lives due to the war. The two reach an agreement. Scorpionsting will take credit for killing Adderstar and, in exchange, Minkscreech- now Minkstar, will escort her to the sundrip. Scorpionsting cooperates, and Minkstar in turn fulfills his end of the bargain. With this, Scorpionsting becomes Scorpionstar.

Dousing the Fire
January 1970

A Giliaclan Warrior named Pepsnap receives a prophecy in a strange dream. Something devastating was coming to Steppe, and with it would come the complete destruction of both Spurclan and Camasclan. Minkstar brushes this off, assuming any real prophecy would come from the clan's Healer. As dark clouds of smoke appear on the horizon, it becomes clear that prophecy has merit. Both Spurclan and Camasclan are forced to evacuate their territories, seeking refuge in Giliaclan's mountains. As the wildfire tears through the territories, an agreement of peace is reached. From now on, the clans will work together and share what they have. Even in times of hardship, all clans must survive.

Calm After the Firestorm
January 1970 - October 1971

With the war finally over, Jadefall is finally able to claim her nine lives at the Sundrip and names Cindermask as her deputy. The decision is controversial but goes largely unchallenged. As months of peace turn into a year, the clans prosper. Though the memory and trauma of war still cling to recent memory, Stargazer Steppe sees a time of peace and resource sharing between cats.

Into Thin Air
November 1971 - March 1973

Cats disappeared strangely around SpurClan territory. While several patrols went to investigate, they rarely returned. The Clans lived in fear of the strange lights and sounds beyond the SpurClan border. Eventually, SpurClan found Minkstar, the GiliaClan leader, sick and emaciated on their territory. They cared for him for six moons before returning him to GiliaClan. The lights and sounds have since faded from the border...

Faith, Fear, and Future
April 1973 - October 1973

Spirits began to appear on the Steppe after a windstorm disturbed the Burnt Tree Place. These spirits, claiming to be from a forgotten Clan called BalsamClan, begged the living for aid. They wished to see their loved ones in StarClan once again, for they had been banished. Over time, the living learned that BalsamClan was banished for their own actions; they had not heeded a warning of a coming fire, and those that stayed in their forest home had died in the blaze. StarClan urged the living to not believe the spirits of these damned cats. This all came to a head at the October gathering, wherein Shalepine, who spoke for BalsamClan, attacked Cinderstar of CamasClan. The Battle of Ash and Stars ensued.
